Department of Motor Vehicles

Disabled Veteran Motor Vehicle Tax Exemption Starting January 1, 2026, all disabled and/or blind veterans in Nebraska can receive an exemption for the Motor Vehicle Tax and Motor Vehicle Fee for ONE vehicle owned and used for their personal transportation. The exemption only applies to the Motor Vehicle Tax and Motor Vehicle Fee. All other taxes and fees (e.g. plate fee, sales tax, wheel tax, etc.) still need to be paid.

Disabled American Veterans

DAV Medical Transportation DAV operates a fleet of vehicles around the country to provide free transportation to and from VA medical facilities for injured and ill veterans. Volunteer drivers operate these vehicles at more than 247 VA locations around the country.

Douglas County

Douglas County Veterans Treatment Court The Douglas County Veterans Treatment Court (DCVTC) was established to offer eligible justice-involved veterans an alternative to the traditional criminal justice system by providing them support and rehabilitation through comprehensive substance use and/or mental health treatment, education, employment, vocational programs; and community resource referrals for housing, childcare, and transportation, all while being judicially monitored. It is an 18 to 24 month program.

Veteran's Designation on Nebraska License or ID The Department of Motor Vehicles offers qualifying veterans the opportunity to register to have a Veteran's designation displayed on their Nebraska license or ID card. Income Tax Exemption on Military Retirement Pay For tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2022, all military retirees may exclude 100% of military retirement benefits from Nebraska taxable income to the extent included in federal adjusted gross income (AGI). No election or form submission is needed to claim the exclusion.

Operation Recognition Operation Recognition awards honorary high school diplomas to veterans who left school to serve their country during WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, and did not complete their education after their release from service.
Reservist Tuition Credit Nebraska residents who are members of a Nebraska-based unit of the Active Selected Reserve may be eligible for a 75% tuition credit (or 50% if pursuing a graduate or professional degree) to University of Nebraska campuses, Nebraska state colleges, and Nebraska community colleges.

Outdoor Nebraska Veteran and Military Park Permits The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission offers special permits to veterans age 64 and older, deployed military, and disabled veterans at reduced or no cost. This includes hunt/fish/fur permits and the Disabled Veterans' Lifetime Annual Park Entry Permit.
Veteran and Active Duty Military Waterfowl Hunting Season The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission offers a special waterfowl hunting season for veterans and active duty military. Eligible participants include veterans as defined in Section 101 of Title 38, United States Code, and members of the Armed Forces on active duty, including members of the National Guard and Reserves on active duty (other than for training).

SCRA The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act can postpone or suspend financial or civil obligations to prevent you from being taken advantage of while on active duty and away from home. Protection begins on the date of entering active duty and generally terminates within 30 to 90 days after discharge.

VA Survivors Pension VA Survivors Pension is a monthly payment to qualified surviving spouses and unmarried dependent children of wartime veterans who meet certain income and net worth limits set by congress.
VALife Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife) provides low-cost coverage to veterans with service-connected disabilities. Veterans can get up to $40,000 in whole life insurance coverage and coverage starts 2 years after you apply.

Military Lifetime Pass The US National Park Service offers a free lifetime park pass for US military veterans and Gold Star Families and their dependents, veterans, and Gold Star families. The free Military Pass waives entrance fees and does not cover expanded amenity or user fees for activities such as camping, transportation, special recreation permits, reservation fees or special tours.
National Parks Annual Military Pass The US National Park Service offers a free annual park pass for current members of the US Military and their dependents, veterans, and Gold Star families. The program waives entrance or standard amenity fees for the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and US Forest Service, and the US Army Corps of Engineers.
National Parks Interagency Access Pass Veterans who have been determined to have a disability (of any rating percentage) are eligible for a free Lifetime Access Pass, good for entry into thousands of federally managed recreation sites across the U.S. The Access Pass may also provide a 50 percent discount on some amenity fees charged for facilities and services such as camping, swimming, boat launching, and specialized interpretive services.
