On Flag Day weekend, June 13-14, American Legion Riders, and other motorcyclists, from across Nebraska will escort an American Flag across the state in commemoration of America’s 250th Birthday. The escort concludes with a ceremony at the State Capitol Rotunda on June 14th at 4pm.
The escort will begin in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, on Saturday, June 13th, at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home, with a short ceremony at 9am. Riders will then travel to Alliance, with a short stop at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Alliance. Continuing on Nebraska Highway 2, the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway, riders will make their way to a lunch stop at Thedford, then an overnight stop in Kearney.
On Flag Day, Sunday, June 14th, the escort will continue with a visit to the Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney. Then, following US-30, they will make their way to stops at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Grand Island and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center-Grand Island. Continuing on US-30, riders will continue eastward to Nebraska highway 92 and onward to Wahoo for lunch. The last leg of the journey will make stops at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue, and the Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Papillion, before arriving at the State Capitol.
After the Rotunda ceremony, the flag the riders escorted across the state will be raised at the State Capitol and remain in place until July 4th, after which it will be presented to the museum at the American Legion Department of Nebraska headquarters.
