Public Veteran Events

The Hall County Hero Flights Association will present a check for $750,000 to the State of Nebraska at the former Grand Island Veterans’ Home Cemetery on July 28th at 10:00 a.m. The funds will be used for the establishment of the Nebraska Veterans’ Cemetery at Grand Island and represent 10% of the proposed cost of the $7.5 million project, a requirement for the project to be eligible for a veterans cemetery grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA). 

Through community fundraising efforts and a loan from the Hall County Board, the team has met the 10% match requirement in a mere 90 days. The VA can provide up to 100 percent of the development cost for an approved project, and the 10% upfront match would be returned to the State of Nebraska to be used towards additional cemetery projects and improvements. The new state cemetery will incorporate the existing cemetery, with plans for a memorial area, burial areas, a committal shelter, flag assembly, administration and maintenance buildings, as well as space for future burial areas. 

In attendance at the ceremony will be Lt. Governor Mike Foley, Nebraska Department of Veterans’ Affairs (NDVA) Director John Hilgert, and Hall County Hero Flight Association Chair Don Shuda, as well as members of the Nebraska Veterans’ Cemetery at Grand Island community advisory committee, Hall County Hero Flight Association, and NDVA. The event is open to the public. 

The NCA veterans cemetery grant program assists states, territories and federally recognized tribal governments in providing gravesites for veterans in those areas where VA's national cemeteries cannot fully satisfy their burial needs. Grants may be used only for the purpose of establishing, expanding, or improving veterans cemeteries that are owned and operated by a state, federally recognized tribal government, or U.S. territory. The Lincoln Vet Center honors all those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War and Vietnam Era (November 1, 1955 - April 30, 1975). Please join the Vet Center on Monday, March 29, 2021 from 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the open shelter in Antelope Park for snacks, drinks, information regarding current VA and Vet Center services, and various Veteran resources. Look for the Mobile Vet Center. This event is open to all Vietnam Veterans and those who support them.

Michael Michener, Army Veteran and Deputy Assistant Administrator of the Bureau for Resilience and Food Security at the U.S. Agency for International Development, will discuss why food security = national security; that America's investments in international agricultural development programs are crucial to tackling crises and reducing poverty, hunger, and malnutrition around the globe.

The Veterans and Military Resource Center and Central Community College Foundation present their first Virtual Event Honoring Women of Military Service featuring a Walk-A-Thon and Online Auction. The Walk-A-Thon is co-hosted by Chris Wissing, daughter of World War II veteran Wilma Kellogg, whose 100th birthday it will be on March 19th. Join the Central Community College Veterans & Military Resource Centers and friends in walking or running a combined total of 100 miles for Wilma by March 19th. There will also be an online auction that opens on March 19th. This event supports for the Women Veterans Scholarship, a scholarship open to all military women and women veterans who are full-time or part-time students at Central Community College and are working toward an associate degree.

Patriotic Productions is inviting the public to a Patriotic Parade & Concert that honors Gold Star Families and Veterans. Our nation's Gold Star Families will be honored as they lead this parade in Downtown Omaha. All Gold Star Family members are welcome from any era and will receive a t-shirt to wear (must RSVP).

The parade will begin at 12th & Jackson in Downtown Omaha. The parade will then move east to 10th Street, and turn south toward the Durham Museum, where a concert will be held following the parade. Performances by Lee Greenwood and Grateful Heart.

If you are a Gold Star Family Member and wish to walk in the parade to represent your fallen loved one, please email your fallen loved one's name, along with the names and t-shirt sizes of those attending to info@rememberingourfallen.org

The Revenue Committee will be holding a hearing on LB 387 on Friday, January 29th, at 1:30 p.m. in Hearing Room 1524 at the Nebraska State Capitol.

LB 387 would build on LB 153, passed in 2019, and increase the tax exemption on military retirement pay from 50% to 100%.

The most impactful ways to show support are by 1) testifying in person at the hearing or by 2) submitting written testimony the morning of the hearing. If you choose option 2, please be sure to follow all instructions carefully.
